Soil SOP & Critical-Path Notes — procedures and dependencies

Soil delivery and pot-fill procedure (week of June 8), field layout and trellis geometry, and critical-path notes flagging dependencies not visible on the Gantt alone.
Soil Delivery & Pot-Fill SOP · Week of June 8
Step Crew / Equipment Detail
1 · Stage Tractor / skid-steer · 1 operator Soil delivered (or mixed) at a central pad. Tractor drops staging piles every few rows so no shovel-throw is more than ~10 ft to a pot. Pre-position empty 45-gal fabric pots in final field grid.
2 · Fill 6–8 shovel crew Hand-fill to ~3″ below rim. Pace: ~2 days for 1,000 pots, ~4 days for 2,000, linear. Best risk-adjusted method — gentle on soil structure, low capital, proven.
3 · Settle 1 person · irrigation hose Hose-water each pot to runoff the same day it's filled. Settles medium, removes air pockets, primes biology. Top off any pots that sink >2″.
Cost ~$2.50–$4 / pot labor At 1,000 pots: ~$2,500–$4,000 labor only. Soil + amendments are separate (see plan doc, est. ~$70k at 1,000 plant scale).
Field Layout & Trellis Geometry · PROVISIONAL — pending Brett confirmation
Dimension Brett's tentative spec Detail
Bed width 10 ft The trellis row itself — width across which plants sit and trellis netting spans. Two plants side-by-side across this width.
Aisle width 8–10 ft between rows Tractor-accessible. Total row pitch ≈ 18–20 ft on center.
Plant grouping Pairs of 2 side-by-side Two plants placed next to each other across the 10 ft bed width — likely ~3–4 ft apart within the pair, to be confirmed.
Pair spacing 5–6 ft between pairs Distance between successive pairs running down the length of the row.
Existing infra Some T-posts in old rows Prior cultivation left T-post infrastructure. Decision pending: re-pound to new spec, supplement, or work around. Walk field with Brett to evaluate.
Open before locking layout: (1) Walk field with Brett to confirm bed width / aisle width / within-pair plant spacing. (2) Lock plant count (depends on budget finalization) — drives total row count and T-post quantity. (3) Decide whether to re-pound existing T-posts or supplement. (4) Sequence: heavy row stakes pounded before soil pot placement (~Jun 1–15). First trellis netting layer goes up right after transplant. Additional trellis layers added as plants grow (Jul–Aug).
Critical-Path Notes
Transplant trigger is biological, not calendar. Jun 24–26 is the planned window — actual transplant starts when roots show through the bottom of the 4″ pots. If they're not rooting through by Jun 24, hold and check daily. Transplanting before roots are ready stunts the plant; transplanting late costs veg days against the Aug 6 flip.
Irrigation is the hidden critical path. Soilscape engagement this week → design by ~Jun 7–10 → parts ordered → install + test live by Jun 22 (2 days before transplant Jun 24). All infrastructure — irrigation, filled pots, perimeter, hardened plants — must be in place before the 3-day transplant operation begins. No exceptions.
Perimeter logic. Deer fence target Jul 4 protects the crop in early flower stretch. Hotwire temp fence must be operational by transplant (Jun 24) — unprotected seedlings for even 5+ nights = devastating browse loss. The Jul 4 target is for the permanent fence; the temp fence is non-negotiable.
Three parallel build streams. Prop infrastructure (▲ prop prep + greenhouse build), field infrastructure (◆ irrigation + soil + pots), and perimeter (▼ deer fence) all run concurrently May 28 – Jun 22. Each stream needs an owner and an honest daily check that it'll land on time. Stream slippage is invisible until convergence — by then it's too late to recover.
